| Spring 2012: The Chatterbox Club |
|
One of our newest programs is the Chatterbox Club. The Chatterbox Club is a group designed for parents with intellectual disabilities and their kids under the age of 4 and is co-lead by an occupational and speech therapist. The group provides a fun laid back environment for parents to meet other parents and for staff to encourage parent-child interaction that fosters language development. For example, cue reading, turn taking, imitation, labeling, narration of routines are examples of the types of interactions that are encouraged through play. Value is placed most on the relationship between the parents and sharing of their experiences of ways to get their kids to talk more.

Each year, TLG works with nearly 1,800 individuals in the Bay Area in which the infant, child, parent or parenting grandparent has a disability or medical issue. Our services to family members with a wide range of disabilities and medical issues range from providing adaptive babycare equipment to promoting child development and enhancing health parent-child relationships. We work with families in their homes and we also have several new programs here on-site at the Ed Roberts Campus including our Early Head Start Program.
The group meets bi-monthly and the kids get an opportunities to also develop gross and fine motor skills, social and cognitive skill development. The Chatterbox Club meets twice a month at the Ed Roberts Campus.
